Job Description

Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Mechanics and Installers install or repair heating, central air conditioning, or refrigeration systems, including oil burners, hot-air furnaces, and heating stoves. May test pipe or tubing joints or connections for leaks, or test electrical circuits or components for continuity. May dismantle malfunctioning systems and test components, using electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic testing equipment.

WHAT SKILLS & TRAINING ARE NEEDED?

FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS:

  • Equipment Maintenance — Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Installation — Installing equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications.
  • Quality Control Analysis — Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
  • Troubleshooting — Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
  • Operation Monitoring — Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly.

TRAINING:

Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Mechanics and Installers requires a Postsecondary non-degree award. Additional training and certifications could be required.
